THE NIGHT IT STARTED

One night I dumped every toy we own onto the basement floor, looked at it, and thought: this cannot be the answer.

It wasn’t a tidy pile by any stretch of the imagination. There were the contents of three bins and a basket, plus the stuff that lives under the couch, then all the toys my kids had ignored and walked past that very afternoon to ask for the TV, not to mention all the mismatched parts I had collected and subsequently labeled “things that need a home.”

Then I sat on the floor with it all for a long time. Not planning anything. Just looking. Looking at a room full of things that had been purchased to make the days better, and the days were not better.

That is the night the Familyful app really started, and I need to be honest here… it did not feel like a beginning. It felt like I was drowning in “stuff” and somehow still completely out of ideas. Because as it turns out, when you are running on caffeine and chaos… a million options and no options feel exactly the same.

WHAT I ACTUALLY WANTED

I did not want more toys, and I did not want a parenting expert. I’ve read the experts. Most of them are right and none of them are in my kitchen at 4:40 in the afternoon when everyone is hungry and nobody can find their shoes.

What I wanted was much smaller than that. I just wanted somebody to tell me what to do next. Not for the year. Just for the next twenty minutes. Somebody or something that knew what was already in the house, knew how old my kids were and what they were into this month, and could then hand me one idea I could start before the moment passed.

I couldn’t find it. I couldn’t find anything even remotely close to it. But I knew it was possible and it could be revolutionary for parents if it existed. So, I started writing it down myself. Post-it notes first. Then a notebook. Then a spreadsheet that honestly got embarrassing. A few failed attempts at creating solutions. Then, eventually, an app, because a spreadsheet does not know that it’s raining or that one kid is sick or that it’s Tuesday and I have nothing left in my gas tank for the day.

WHY I’M BUILDING IT MYSELF

I am not a developer. I’m a parent at home with the kids, and I am building this at the kitchen table in the hours the house gives me, which are early, late, and fifteen minutes in the middle when everyone is busy. I have learned more than I ever thought possible and am continuing to grow and learn every single day.

Choosing to build the Familyful app (and choosing to build it myself) has not been a tidy decision, and it also has not been a free one. This process costs sleep. It costs the Saturday mornings I’d rather spend on the floor with my kids. Some weeks it costs money I’d rather not talk about. I’m sharing all of this because what I am building is supposed to be about the ordinary hours at home, and therefore my ordinary hours at home with my own kids will always continue to be my priority. I am building this for them, and because I truly believe this product needs to exist for parents, kids, and families everywhere. And in that same breath, I also wholeheartedly believe that to make this product work as intended, it has to be built by someone who is living it. An app that parents and families can trust within their own homes? That needs to be built by a parent who understands and cares. With every decision made at Familyful, we ask: “Do the parents win FIRST with this choice?”

HOW IT WORKS, IN ONE BREATH

You tell it who is in your house and what you actually have: the toys, the craft drawer, and the couch cushions. It gives you one thing to do right now, sized to the kid, the room, and the mood. It gets better the more you use it too. There’s a check-in for the days that are going sideways. There’s a corner of it for you, the parent, because you are also a person in this house.

Some things I decided early and won’t budge. No ads, because an app that earns profit from your attention will always want more of it. The truth is that once ads are introduced, a developer is incentivized to keep you scrolling. That is the opposite of Familyful. We want to give you one thing: what you need next. Then we want to get you back to your table with your family. This also keeps us at Familyful focused on providing the best possible product for parents. Not on how to keep parents scrolling within the app.

WHAT COMES NEXT

I’ll write here about once a month (hopefully, but if the car breaks down, the flu takes over the house, and the water heater goes out, all in the same week again… then I may miss a month. Point is, I won’t flood your inbox). Some posts might be about the app, some may be about our books, and some may be about my experience setting up a toy rotation. It’ll also be about trying to build a business from a kitchen table with kids underfoot, and about watching them learn and get good at building things… while I’m sitting right next to them learning and getting good at building things too.

I’m not an expert. I’m the parent behind the curtain. If that’s useful to you, I’m glad you’re here.

One. I send it by hand, which is the only reason I can promise it: something useful, whatever we have just made, and an honest note on how the app is going. One click unsubscribes you and I will not chase it.
